Indian police disperse gang recruiting young Indians into Russian army
Indian police have arrested four individuals who were involved in a human smuggling network that lured young people with the promise of lucrative education and university jobs, only to send them to fight for Russia in the conflict in Ukraine. The Central Bureau of Investigation in India said the group lured approximately 35 Indian men.
Among those arrested in the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu were a translator, a visa and ticket processing worker and two senior “recruiters”. Investigators are still examining other possible persons involved in this activity.
The families of two Indian men who died fighting for Russia in Ukraine said the men expected to serve as auxiliary forces in the army. India’s foreign ministry says it is discussing the cases with Russia, but Moscow did not respond to repeated requests for comment from reporters.
India, which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is not among the countries that have condemned Russia for its attack on Ukraine, but still considers Moscow a strategic partner. India maintains a complex relationship not only with Russia but also with the United States and Britain. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba visited India in late March to seek support for Ukraine’s peace plan. India has stressed the need for diplomacy and dialogue to end the conflict and has expressed its willingness to engage as a mediator in possible peace talks.
