Trump threatens Europe with 100% tariffs over digital tax
Trade relations between the United States and the European Union could once again face significant strain. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that if certain European countries introduce a digital services tax targeting American technology giants, Washington will respond with an exceptionally tough measure—a 100% tariff on all goods imported from those countries.
Trump issued the warning on his social media platform, Truth Social. According to the president, a digital tax is not intended to create a fairer marketplace but instead represents a targeted attack on major U.S. companies such as Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Google. He also stated that any new tariffs would take precedence over both existing and future trade agreements between the United States and the countries involved.
The renewed tensions come only a short time after the European Union and the United States reached a new trade agreement aimed at reducing trade barriers and strengthening economic cooperation across the Atlantic. However, the issue of a digital services tax was left out of the deal and remains one of the most contentious topics in transatlantic relations.
Several European countries support the introduction of a digital tax as a way to ensure that multinational technology companies pay taxes in the countries where they generate revenue. The United States, however, has long argued that such measures unfairly target American businesses and undermine their competitiveness in global markets.
If Trump follows through on his threat, the result could be a new trade dispute between the United States and Europe. A 100% tariff would significantly increase the cost of European products entering the U.S. market, affecting a wide range of exporters—from the automotive industry to consumer goods manufacturers. Meanwhile, the European Union continues to insist that it has the sovereign right to determine its own tax policies, warning that any unilateral action by Washington could trigger retaliatory measures.
Whether Trump’s warning remains political rhetoric or escalates into another major tariff dispute will become clear in the coming weeks. One thing is already certain: the digital services tax has become one of the most sensitive and potentially explosive issues in current trade relations between Europe and the United States.
