Blue Origin rocket explodes during test, causing major setback for Bezos’ space company
American aerospace company Blue Origin is facing another major complication after its New Glenn rocket exploded during a ground test in Florida. The incident happened during a so-called “hot fire” test, when engineers ignite the rocket’s engines before an actual launch to verify that all systems work correctly. Shortly after ignition, a massive explosion occurred, creating a huge fireball and damaging parts of the launch infrastructure.
The company confirmed that no injuries were reported. According to Blue Origin, all employees and technicians were evacuated safely before the explosion. Company founder Jeff Bezos described the event as a “very difficult day,” but emphasized that the company would continue developing the New Glenn program despite the setback.
The explosion represents a serious challenge for the New Glenn project, which is intended to compete directly with rockets developed by SpaceX. New Glenn is a heavy-lift rocket designed for launching satellites, supporting lunar missions, and transporting commercial payloads into orbit. The rocket is named after John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit Earth. Development of the system has taken nearly a decade and has already experienced multiple delays and technical difficulties.
According to available reports, the rocket was expected to launch internet satellites for Amazon’s Project Kuiper in the coming months. The project is designed to compete with the Starlink satellite network operated by SpaceX. Fortunately, no satellites were onboard during the test, preventing additional financial losses. The accident comes at a critical moment for Blue Origin, which has been trying to strengthen its position within the rapidly growing space industry. The company has secured several important contracts with NASA and is involved in the Artemis program aimed at returning humans to the Moon. Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket and Blue Moon lunar lander are expected to play an important role in future lunar exploration and the long-term goal of establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon.
NASA stated that it would carefully monitor the investigation into the explosion. The incident could affect future launch schedules and certification processes for the rocket. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also expected to investigate the cause of the failure.
In recent years, Blue Origin has struggled to keep pace with SpaceX, which currently dominates the commercial launch market. While SpaceX regularly launches Falcon 9 rockets and aggressively develops its massive Starship system, Blue Origin has often been criticized for slower development, repeated delays, and a smaller number of successful missions.
The incident also sparked reactions across the space industry. Elon Musk commented that rocket development is extremely difficult and that failures are a normal part of advancing space technology. Nevertheless, the explosion is another significant setback for Blue Origin in the growing competition over the future of commercial spaceflight.
