American computer science graduates struggle to find jobs in their field

Manasi Mishra recently shared her disappointment on TikTok: after completing her computer science degree, she was invited to interview by only one company—the fast food chain Chipotle. Her story is not unique.
Twenty-five-year-old Zach Taylor graduated with a degree in computer science from Oregon State University at a time when job offers in the tech industry seemed almost guaranteed. However, the reality after his graduation in 2023 is different – he sent over 5,700 job applications, got 13 interviews, but has yet to receive a full-time offer. He admits that this is one of the most difficult and demoralizing experiences of his life.
Ten years ago, technology leaders, billionaires, and even US presidents were sending a clear message: learn to code, secure a better future for yourself, and strengthen the US economy at the same time. Companies attracted students with high salaries, attractive benefits, and the opportunity to participate in the development of popular applications. This optimistic picture helped kick-start a boom in computer science studies at universities.
Last year alone, the number of computer science students in the US exceeded 170,000, more than double the number in 2014. According to data from the non-profit organization Computing Research Association, which tracks trends at approximately 200 universities, this is the highest level of interest in history. There are now far more graduates than jobs, which are often limited by massive layoffs at technology companies. The original promises of job security have thus become harsh reality: thousands of young people with prestigious degrees in fields that were supposed to be their ticket to the future are now waiting in vain for their first opportunity in the IT sector.
