Traveler uncovers fake evidence created by artificial intelligence on Airbnb

At the beginning of the year, a traveler from London rented an apartment in Manhattan, where she planned to stay for about two and a half months during her studies. However, after a few weeks, she gave the neighborhood a poor review and decided to terminate the lease early. Shortly thereafter, she received a message from the host about alleged damage—he claimed that the apartment had suffered costly damage amounting to over £12,000. He attached photos of broken items, dirty mattresses, and damaged appliances.

The woman immediately and categorically rejected the accusations: she claimed to have left the apartment in good condition and had only visited it twice during her stay. In addition, she noticed that the photos of the damaged items showed inconsistencies, as if they had been edited or created using artificial intelligence.

Airbnb initially announced that the host was entitled to compensation and demanded over £5,300. The traveler appealed, offering eyewitness testimony and pointing out differences between photos of the same furniture. Airbnb subsequently decided to refund £500, then offered £854, but then agreed to a full refund — £4,269, or approximately CZK 120,000. In addition, it removed the negative review from her profile and apologized for the situation.

The platform also stated that it provides the possibility of reviewing complaints and that it has a special team that evaluates evidence fairly and strives to achieve a fair outcome for all parties involved. This case highlights a worrying risk: artificial intelligence makes it easy to falsify evidence, yet some such evidence is initially accepted without further scrutiny. The woman warned that people without resources or courage would easily give in to such false accusations. The case thus illustrates how artificial intelligence can be abused in the digital age, even in legal disputes.
