Billions didn’t bring him happiness. Now he eats 100 pills a day and wants to live forever

Staying young is the modest goal of 46-year-old American entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, who is waging a war against ageing. He has dedicated his life to his fight for eternity with determination. He consumes over 100 pills a day and has given up alcohol and social life.

What does Bryan’s day look like? He wakes up at 4:30 a.m., eats all his daily calorie intake before 11 a.m., and goes to bed alone at 8:30 p.m. He ingests more than 100 different dietary supplements a day, exposes his body to red light, and spends his sitting positions on an electromagnetic device to strengthen his pelvic floor.

The American entrepreneur believes the strict regime will help him slow down the ageing process. He hopes that one chronological year can pass without his body ageing. And what is his ultimate goal? “Not to die,” Bryan confided to The Guardian.
In 2013, Johnson sold his company, Braintree Venmo, for $800m (equivalent to just under £16bn). But the money didn’t bring him much luck. Alcohol, binge eating and depression filled his life. He decided to change his lifestyle and put himself in the hands of scientists and algorithms.

“We go through every scientific publication on health and life expectancy (about 2000 publications so far). We take each study, evaluate it against a set of criteria, and prioritize it,” Johnson said in describing the system of work.

His lifestyle is certainly no walk in the park and requires a great deal of sacrifice. His strict diet consists of three meals a day, which include only boiled broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and garlic. The most delectable is the nut pudding, in which the would-be immortal American enjoys chia seeds, macadamia nuts and berries.

As part of trying out various techniques, Johnson even experimented with blood plasma, which he took from his 18-year-old son Talmage, and donated his own blood plasma to his father. Due to the lack of results, he eventually abandoned this method.
Of course, a healthy lifestyle cannot do without exercise. Bryan combines strength training and cardiovascular exercise, as both lead to a significant reduction in mortality. He can lift over 100kg on the bench press and his body fat level is around 7 per cent.

What are the results of this method so far? Although Bryan’s age-specific biomarkers (strength, bone mineral density, hair thickness) are improving, they do not show a slowing of ageing in any significant way.

“We humans have a set of genes that limit our lifespan. There is nothing in Johnson’s system that changes his maximum lifespan. You can say he has gotten on a better trajectory of aging, but you can’t say he has stopped the aging process,” commented Charles Brenner, a biochemist who studies longevity, on the lifestyle of the American entrepreneur.
