Music helps drivers stay alert, podcasts can be distracting

New research by the Transport Research Center, commissioned by the Brno Transport Authority, has revealed interesting findings about the impact of listening to the radio on driver attention and safety. The study showed that listening to music while driving can have a positive effect on concentration and helps drivers reduce fatigue during long shifts. On the other hand, listening to spoken word, such as podcasts or audiobooks, can be distracting and increase the risk of reduced attention.
According to the research results, music acts as a refreshing element that helps drivers break out of a monotonous routine and prevent fatigue, which is one of the risk factors for traffic accidents. However, music is not entirely risk-free. Dynamic and loud music can lead to a more risky driving style, such as speeding or less attentive behavior behind the wheel.
On the other hand, listening to spoken word requires more mental capacity from the driver, as the brain has to process complex information and concentrate on the content. This can distract from driving, especially in more demanding traffic situations. Therefore, listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or long conversations while driving is problematic and can compromise safety. The Brno Public Transport Authority considered banning drivers from listening to spoken word content while working, but ultimately decided not to interfere with this habit. Drivers often listen to the radio, where music is combined with short blocks of spoken word content, which, according to research, is not as distracting as spoken word programs or podcasts alone. Instead of banning it, DPMB focuses on educating and informing drivers about what can help them stay focused behind the wheel and what, on the contrary, is harmful.
The results of the research were shared directly with drivers and will be used in regular training sessions to make them aware of the importance of choosing the right audio accompaniment while driving. The right music can thus be one of the tools to prevent fatigue and increase road safety. The research showed that the radio behind the wheel is not only a source of entertainment, but can also be a practical aid if drivers choose the right type of content. Listening to music helps maintain attention and reduces feelings of loneliness or boredom, which are common triggers of fatigue. On the other hand, spoken programs require greater concentration, which can distract from driving, so it is good to be aware of the possible risks when listening to them.
