OpenAI introduces Dots: AI agents designed to keep working without constant user input
OpenAI is expanding the role of artificial intelligence beyond traditional chatbots with a new concept called Dots. Instead of simply responding to individual prompts, these AI agents are designed to take responsibility for longer-running tasks and continue working with less direct supervision.
The idea is to give users a digital assistant that can handle a project over time, interact with different applications and return to the user when a decision or additional information is required.
According to OpenAI, Dots are built around the GPT-6 Astra model and each agent operates through its own cloud-based computer environment.
From answering questions to completing tasks
Traditional chatbots generally wait for a user to send a new request before doing anything else. Dots are designed around a different approach.
A user can assign an agent a broader objective rather than a single question. The Dot can then break the task into individual steps, gather information, work with documents or code and continue making progress without requiring a new prompt after every action.
If the agent reaches a point where human judgment is necessary, it can ask the user for instructions before proceeding.
This also means that work can continue while the user is away from their computer.
Connections to everyday apps
One of the key features of the system is its ability to work with external services and applications.
OpenAI says Dots can connect with tools such as Google Calendar, Google Drive, GitHub, Slack and Microsoft Teams. This allows an agent to combine information from several sources instead of operating inside a single application. (chatgpt.com)
For example, an agent could follow the progress of a software project, organize information from company documents or prepare material for a meeting.
Developers could also use agents for tasks such as reviewing code, tracking issues or handling repetitive maintenance work.
Humans remain in control
Giving an AI system more independence also creates additional security concerns. OpenAI therefore allows users to define what individual agents can access and which actions they are allowed to perform.
More sensitive operations can require explicit approval from the user rather than being completed automatically.
OpenAI also uses an Auto-review system designed to check certain actions against predefined rules and security requirements. Some particularly sensitive operations remain subject to human control. (chatgpt.com)
Aiming at professional users
Many of the examples surrounding Dots focus on business and professional workflows. AI agents could potentially take over repetitive administrative tasks, analyze internal information or assist teams with ongoing projects.
The technology also reflects a broader shift in the AI industry. Companies are increasingly developing systems that are intended not only to generate text or answer questions, but to actually perform sequences of actions on behalf of their users.
OpenAI is therefore positioning Dots as a step toward AI systems that behave more like digital coworkers than conventional chatbots.
Availability remains limited
Dots are being introduced gradually across ChatGPT’s web, mobile and desktop experiences. Availability depends on the user’s plan, region and account configuration, with some features aimed specifically at business customers.
The concept represents a significant change in how AI assistants could be used. Instead of repeatedly telling an AI what to do, users can increasingly give it a broader objective and allow it to handle the individual steps.
If this model becomes widespread, the role of AI assistants could shift considerably—from tools that simply respond to prompts to systems capable of carrying out longer-term work with humans providing oversight when it matters.
