From philosophy to billions: Richard Valtr takes czech startup Mews toward Wall Street
Czech technology company Mews is entering a new phase of its growth. The startup, founded by entrepreneur Richard Valtr, has reached a valuation of around $2 billion after securing another major investment. Its next big target is the United States, where the company sees enormous potential for further expansion.
Mews develops software for the hospitality industry. Its platform is designed to help hotels manage reservations, payments, guest services and other everyday operations through a single digital system.
But the company has ambitions that go far beyond traditional hotel software. Mews wants to become a central technology platform for the hospitality industry, while artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a key part of its strategy.
From Philosophy to a Billion-Dollar Technology Company
Richard Valtr’s career path is unusual for a technology entrepreneur. He studied philosophy at University College London before becoming involved in the hotel and property business.
His family had been active in real estate and hospitality for years, and Valtr eventually became involved in the development of The Emblem hotel in Prague.
In 2012, he co-founded Mews with Dutch entrepreneur Matthijs Welle. What began as a relatively small technology project gradually grew into an international software company.
A series of investment rounds helped finance the company’s expansion. In 2024, Mews raised around $210 million, pushing its valuation to approximately $2.5 billion. The latest investment has further strengthened the company’s position and provided additional resources for its next stage of growth.
Artificial Intelligence Is Changing the Way Mews Works
One of the biggest changes taking place inside Mews is the growing role of artificial intelligence.
The company is not treating AI simply as another feature added to its software. Instead, it is becoming part of how employees work and how new products are developed.
Employees can use AI agents to handle certain tasks, while development teams are increasingly combining roles that were traditionally separated between software engineers, designers and product managers.
The goal is to allow smaller teams to build and test new products more quickly. AI effectively becomes a tool that enables employees to act more independently and accelerate the development process.
The transformation has also affected the company’s workforce. Mews has announced job cuts as part of the broader restructuring. According to the company’s leadership, the changes are connected to the transformation of its operating model rather than financial difficulties.
Why the United States Matters
The US is one of the most important markets for Mews. The American hospitality industry differs significantly from the European market, with large hotel chains playing a particularly important role.
Mews sees these large operators as a major opportunity. Its goal is to provide a technology platform capable of connecting and simplifying many of the processes involved in running modern hotels.
Success in the US could also become an important step toward a potential future stock market listing. Valtr has previously discussed the possibility of taking the company public in the United States.
AI Could Change Hotel Reservations
Artificial intelligence could also transform the way people book hotels.
Instead of searching through numerous websites and comparing dozens of options themselves, travelers could increasingly rely on AI agents. A user might simply describe their preferred destination, budget and requirements, while an AI system handles the search and potentially completes the reservation.
Such a shift could challenge the traditional online travel industry. At the same time, it could create a major opportunity for companies like Mews.
The Czech startup is therefore aiming for more than simply selling hotel management software. Its long-term ambition is to become part of the technological infrastructure behind the hospitality industry of the future.
If its strategy succeeds, Mews could become one of the most significant Czech technology companies to make a global impact.
