Apple has a problem: New iPhones are already on display before their official debut
Apple has spent years turning product launches into carefully controlled events. New iPhones are normally surrounded by secrecy, speculation and carefully managed leaks, with the company revealing the final design only when the official presentation begins.
This year, however, that strategy is facing an unusual challenge.
Visitors to IFA 2026 in Berlin can already see accessories and physical mock-ups apparently designed for Apple’s upcoming iPhone models. The company itself is not officially displaying the phones at the trade show, but manufacturers of cases, screen protectors and other accessories have effectively provided an early preview of what Apple is expected to unveil.
The timing is particularly awkward for Apple because its major September event is now just days away. The company is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, with Apple’s first foldable iPhone also attracting enormous attention.
The accessories are giving away Apple’s secrets
Accessory manufacturers have a strong reason to prepare products before a new iPhone officially reaches stores.
Cases, screen protectors and other products need to be ready almost immediately after launch. If manufacturers waited until Apple’s presentation to begin production, they could miss one of the most profitable periods of the year.
That means accessory companies often receive information about dimensions and design well before consumers do.
At IFA, this has created a strange situation. Apple’s next-generation phones can be represented by cases and mock-ups even though Apple itself has not yet officially shown the devices.
The result is that some of the mystery surrounding the new iPhones has already disappeared.
The iPhone 18 Pro is no longer completely mysterious
The biggest attention is currently focused on the iPhone 18 Pro family.
Various physical models and accessories displayed around the trade show floor appear to reflect the expected dimensions and design of the upcoming phones. Some manufacturers are also showing different color options, giving visitors an idea of what Apple’s next flagship generation could look like.
That does not mean every detail seen at IFA is guaranteed to appear in the final retail products. Accessory companies work from information that can sometimes change before launch.
Nevertheless, the sheer number of products prepared for the new iPhones makes it increasingly difficult for Apple to keep the design completely secret.
And this year there is another reason why the leaks are attracting so much attention.
Apple’s foldable iPhone could be the real star
The most significant rumored addition to the lineup is Apple’s first foldable smartphone.
For years, Samsung and other Android manufacturers have experimented with folding displays, while Apple has remained on the sidelines. That could finally change in 2026.
The rumored device is frequently referred to as the iPhone Ultra or simply the iPhone Fold, although Apple has not officially confirmed either name.
Reports suggest that the phone will use a book-style folding design. When opened, it could offer a significantly larger display than a conventional iPhone while remaining compact enough to carry when folded.
That would make it one of the biggest changes to the iPhone product family in years.
Recent reports indicate that the foldable iPhone could be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models at Apple’s September 9 event.
Why a foldable iPhone matters so much
Apple would not be entering an empty market.
Samsung already has several generations of Galaxy Z Fold devices, while Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi and Huawei have developed increasingly sophisticated foldable phones. Xiaomi, for example, used IFA 2026 to showcase its own new foldable device shortly before Apple’s expected announcement.
Apple therefore has a difficult task.
Simply producing a phone that folds will not be enough. Customers will expect Apple to offer a refined hinge, a durable display, strong battery life and software that takes advantage of the larger internal screen.
The company will also have to justify what is expected to be a very high price.
A successful first-generation foldable could nevertheless create an entirely new premium category for Apple.
Apple’s launch strategy may also be changing
The hardware itself is not the only unusual part of this year’s iPhone story.
Apple is reportedly changing the traditional release schedule. Instead of introducing the entire iPhone 18 family at the same time, the company is expected to focus its September event on the premium models.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be central to the event, while the standard iPhone 18 and some other models may arrive later, potentially in 2027.
That would make this year’s September presentation considerably more focused on Apple’s most expensive devices.
It also gives the company an opportunity to position the foldable model as the ultimate iPhone rather than simply another member of the lineup.
Manufacturers are preparing for launch day
For accessory companies, however, speculation is less important than timing.
When millions of customers buy a new smartphone, they immediately need cases, screen protection, chargers and other accessories. Being among the first companies with compatible products can therefore be extremely valuable.
This explains why visitors at IFA can already encounter products designed around phones that have not officially been announced.
It also demonstrates just how complicated the modern smartphone supply chain has become. A new iPhone involves not only Apple and its manufacturing partners, but also hundreds of companies producing accessories and components.
Keeping every detail secret across such a large ecosystem is almost impossible.
Apple may still have a few surprises
Even though leaks have revealed plenty, the official presentation still matters.
Apple can confirm which designs are real, reveal final specifications and demonstrate features that cannot be understood from a case or dummy phone.
The company may also have software features or hardware improvements that have not yet appeared in leaked materials.
That is particularly important for the foldable model. Details such as the hinge mechanism, display technology, software interface and integration with iOS could determine whether Apple’s first foldable is considered a breakthrough or simply another expensive folding smartphone.
The countdown is almost over
The interesting thing about this year’s situation is that Apple’s biggest reveal is no longer entirely a mystery.
Visitors to IFA have already seen accessories and physical representations of the expected devices, while leaks have provided additional information about the iPhone 18 Pro and the rumored foldable iPhone.
At the same time, competing manufacturers are using the same period to promote their own flagship products and foldables. IFA 2026 has therefore become an unusually useful preview of the smartphone battle that will dominate the final months of the year.
Apple’s September 9 event will finally separate confirmed information from speculation.
