AI is developing too fast: Anthropic CEO warns humanity may not be ready

The development of artificial intelligence is accelerating rapidly, bringing not only new technological possibilities but also growing concerns about safety. Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, has warned that the race to build increasingly powerful AI systems could be moving faster than society can prepare for the consequences.

According to Amodei, the biggest concern is not artificial intelligence itself, but the speed at which its capabilities are improving. If the current pace continues, major changes could arrive within the next year or two. This is why he believes technology companies should focus not only on making AI more powerful, but also on testing, safety measures and understanding how advanced systems behave.

AI Could Become More Autonomous

Modern AI models are already capable of performing tasks that previously required highly skilled professionals. They can analyze large amounts of information, write software, conduct research and interact with digital services.

As these systems become more advanced, however, predicting their behavior may become increasingly difficult.

Amodei has pointed to incidents involving AI systems as examples of why stronger safeguards are necessary. He has argued that unexpected behavior and the potential misuse of AI could become increasingly serious problems as models gain more autonomy and access to real-world tools.

The challenge is therefore not simply creating smarter AI. Companies also need enough time and resources to test these systems and identify potential weaknesses before they are widely deployed.

Calls for Independent Oversight

One possible solution is greater independent oversight of advanced AI development. Amodei has argued that outside experts should have opportunities to examine how powerful AI systems are being tested and whether appropriate safety standards are being followed.

Cooperation between technology companies could also play an important role. AI developers in democratic countries may need to establish common safety standards and agree on certain principles governing the development of increasingly capable systems.

However, achieving such cooperation could be difficult.

Artificial intelligence has become a major strategic technology, and governments around the world are competing for leadership in the field. If one company or country slows down its development while competitors continue at full speed, maintaining a technological advantage could become more difficult.

Growing Concern Among AI Leaders

Amodei is not the only prominent technology leader raising concerns about the future of artificial intelligence. Other influential figures in the AI industry, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and entrepreneur Elon Musk, have also discussed the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems.

This creates an unusual situation. Some of the people leading the development of the most advanced artificial intelligence technologies are also warning that society needs to take safety more seriously.

The central question may therefore not be how intelligent AI can become, but whether humans can establish effective rules and safeguards quickly enough.

Artificial intelligence could bring enormous benefits to science, business and everyday life. At the same time, its rapid development means that decisions about safety, regulation and control may become just as important as technological progress itself.
